Deciding Between Auto Glass Repair And Replacement

Britney Simpson

The open road has long provided opportunities for excitement and freedom, but those opportunities come with a variety of responsibilities. The open road contains a number of hazards, and if your auto glass is damaged by debris, you can find yourself in a difficult conundrum. Luckily, there are a few simple things you can check when deciding between repairing and replacing your auto glass.

Below, you'll find a guide to some of those criteria. Keeping these variables in mind when pursuing an auto glass solution will allow you to make the right choice for your vehicle and can help guarantee that you stay safely on the road while absorbing a minimal hit to your pocketbook.

Location

Most modern auto glass repair techniques involve injecting a clear polymer into the damaged area which then hardens and is supported by the surrounding glass. As such, damage to the center of your windshield may be easier to repair, as there's a larger amount of surface area that can provide the necessary support.

When the damage occurs close to the edge of the glass, however, you may be unable to successfully have it patched. These areas not only don't have as much surrounding support, but are also typically a stress point for the remainder of the window pane. In these cases, you're likely looking at a full repair.

Shape

Perhaps the most common type of auto glass damage occurs when road debris is kicked up and a large chunk is taken out of the glass. Unfortunately, these can be the most difficult types of damage to repair, as the circular, radiating damage will require a thick patch in a localized area which could result in difficulties with maintaining transparency.

Longer cracks, however, such as those caused by freezing temperatures, can often be more easily filled. Long, thin cracks require a smaller volume of fill in a particular area, increasing the odds that the repair will maintain full glass transparency.

Depth

Because modern glass patches require bonding to the surrounding area, full penetrative damage may be difficult to repair. Luckily, many cracks are mild enough that at least some glass remains in tact underneath the fissure, allowing the damage to be more easily filled. If your auto glass is cracked all the way through, however, you're likely facing a replacement. It's also worth considering whether or not you want to risk patching a crack that could end up failing later if the depth of the damage continues to grow.
