Tips For Making Windows Energy Efficient

Britney Simpson

Your house can be energy efficient in most respects. However, if your windows aren't sealed up tight, most of your green efforts are literally going out the window. You don't even have to have drafts coming in. A home that doesn't feature energy efficient windows is vulnerable to outside conditions, becoming too hot or cold when you want the exact opposite. Maximize your windows for energy efficiency.

Have Window Films Installed

You know how tinted windows in your car reduce the internal heat of the vehicle? The same concept applies to residential window tinting. Don't imagine blackened or metallic windows in your home. Window films can be completely clear or lightly tinted.

Window films are important in homes that receive a lot of sun. Not only does sunlight create hot spots, but the sun fades your furniture and paint. It also creates glare on the television screen. At minimum, consider glass tinting for the windows that receive the most sunlight.

Choose Energy-Efficient Frames

If you're getting ready to replace your windows, the frame material is one option you'll be considering. According to House Logic, vinyl, wood, aluminum and fiberglass are the most energy-efficient materials. Vinyl is a poor heat conductor, meaning it won't transfer heat energy inside the house. Wooden frames also resist transferring heat inside. Aluminum and fiberglass are durable for wet or humid climates.

Look for Double-Paned Models

Another feature that adds to the energy efficiency of windows is how many panes of glass stand between your room and the outdoors. Two panes of glass -- or a double-paned window – are better than one. The extra layer keeps the heat in. If you add window films to both, the extra pane also helps keep sun energy out.

Ask for a Gas Fill

If cold temperatures are a major factor, consider asking for a gas fill. Gases insulate better than plain air. The space between glass panes can be filled with argon, krypton, carbon dioxide or sulfur hexafluoride. Gas fills work best when a window tint or coating has been added to the glass.

Opt for Energy Efficient Design

While selecting new windows for energy efficiency, consider how the design adds to the green value. For instance, if you have a cold room, a picture window with double panes and a gas-filled interior is a good way to maximize passive solar energy. Casement windows work well in windy areas because they are designed to seal tighter when the wind blows toward the house. These windows are also ideal for a quick cool-down because they open wide.

As you consider ways to reduce your utility bills and promote being green, consider how best to make your windows more energy efficient.
