Some Questions To Ask Before You Get Windshield Repair

Britney Simpson

It is not uncommon to be driving out and about only to have a rock or something hit your windshield. In some cases it just a small dent, but in other circumstances it can shatter the whole windshield. Here are a couple questions that you should ask when it comes to windshield replacement.

Could I Do Rock Chip Repair?

Rock chip repair is much easier and generally much more affordable. Most insurance companies will pay for rock chip repair since they know that it is much cheaper for them to pay for a simple chip on the windshield than replace the whole thing.

If you notice just a small spot on the windshield take it in right away. A professional might be able to fix it within a short amount of time and for little cost.

If you take it to one person and they advise you to get a whole replacement on a simple chip, you should consider getting a second opinion. Treat your car like you would your body. Get a second opinion before you take on a major fix like full windshield replacement instead of a windshield repair.

How Long Will The Full Replacement Take?

This is a very loaded question. You are not just asking to see how long you will have to wait for your car, although this is an important aspect. Instead, the amount of time that it takes the repairmen to fix your car will directly correlate to how safe and good they are doing it.

For example, a windshield needs to have a certain amount of time where it is not moved after the adhesive is put on. This is because in order for the sealant to really seal it has to set. If the repairman tells you that you can take it moments after they apply the sealant, you should go to another place. This is a sign that they either aren't using the right adhesive or they don't understand how to properly do it.

Will Gloves Be Worn During The Installation?

Another important factor is if gloves will be worn while the windshield is installed. This is important because the oil on the hands can interfere with the sealing process. If the repairman isn't careful they could easily contaminate the windshield area so that it doesn't seal as well. This could be dangerous for you and anyone else who drives the car afterwards.

These are just a couple questions that you should ask before you hire someone to replace your windshield.
