5 Tips to Keep Your Windshield in Good Condition

While it might not be the first part you think of when it comes to car maintenance, keeping your windshield in good condition is essential to making sure your vehicle is as safe as possible. Take good care of your windshield and it could last for the entire life of your car.

1. Keep It Clean

Making sure your windshield stays clean is one of the best things you can do to make sure your view is unobstructed. Park away from trees when possible and clean any leaves, sap, insects, or bird droppings before you drive. In the winter months, be sure to scrape off any ice and dust off any snow before you get behind the wheel.

2. Change Your Wiper Blades Regularly

Windshield wiper blades don't last forever, so check them at least once a month to make sure they aren't worn or damaged. The rubber should be smooth and free of cracks or missing chunks that could streak or scratch your windshield. Press on the blades gently to ensure they're still flexible enough to follow the curve of the glass. You should replace your wiper blades at least every six months.

3. Choose the Right Wiper Fluid

Don't go for the cheapest windshield wiper fluid if you want your windshield to stay in the best condition possible. A good fluid helps protect the glass from scratches and cracks. Opt for a fluid that advertises itself as weatherproof and avoid products that contain ammonia, which can damage the glass over time, especially if you have a tinted windshield. Make sure you top off with a de-icing solution if you live in an area that sees freezing temperatures. Wiper fluid that freezes before it's cleared away can lead to cracks.

4. Stay Out of the Sun

Park in the shade whenever possible. Sunlight can cause the glass of your windshield to expand, which can weaken it. It's particularly important to avoid the sun if you have any damage you've yet to have fixed. Cracks and chips can easily expand if you leave your car baking in the sun.

5. Repair Damage Promptly

Even if you've taken extremely good care of your windshield, a flying pebble or piece of gravel from the vehicle in front of you can create a chip or crack in your windshield glass. If this happens, take your car to an auto glass replacement specialist as soon as possible. Leaving windshield damage alone impairs your visibility and driving with a damaged windshield is illegal in some areas. Chips smaller than the size of a U.S. quarter and cracks under 3 inches in length can often be repaired, saving you from a full windshield replacement.
