Four Tips To Help With Removal Of Windows And Prepare For Installation

Britney Simpson

If you are renovating your home and want to improve energy efficiency, replacing the windows can be a good investment. In some of the openings, special replacement glass can be used. You may have other windows that need to be completely replaced. In any case, there will be things that need to be removed to prepare for installation. Here are some tips to help you with the removal of your old windows:

1. Removing Sashes And Stops From Old Windows

Before replacement glass can be installed, the windows have to be prepared. This means that the sashes with the glass have to be removed. You will also need to remove any hardware, such as stops, tracks and springs that were holding the window in place. You should have a clean opening once everything is removed and just the window trim.

2. Removing An Entire Old Window Frame From Opening

Removing the entire window can be very easy, but you will want to be careful when doing this. First, remove the interior trim and set it to the side. Look to see if there are any fasteners on the sides of the window and remove them. From the outside, use a pry bar to jar the window loose and get it out of the opening. Be careful not to damage the exterior finish, such as brick or siding.

3. Preparing Openings For Replacements To Be Installed

If you are going to be installing replacement glass in some of the windows, you will want to prep them. This can be done by repairing any wood damage and installing a seal leveler if needed.  Also, you may want to caulk around the frame and make sure that it is well insulated before the new glass is installed.

4. Getting Ready To Install A New Window In An Opening

For a completely new installation, you will want to prepare the opening. The opening should be completely level and square. You will also want to add any insulation and a moisture barrier to the seal before you install a new window. Sealing the opening will help to protect your home from potential water leaks and moisture that can get in around the window.

These are some tips to help you prepare for new window installation in your home. If you are ready to upgrade the windows in your home, contact a window replacement service such as Five Star Windows Inc and talk with them about the needs of your home.
