Tips To Make Your Small Bathroom Feel Bigger

A small bathroom gets the job done, but it can also feel cramped and claustrophobic. Fortunately, there are some design options you can implement to make the space feel much larger. Not only will it seem like you have more room, but it will also be a more pleasant place to spend your time.

Tip #1: Go white and bright

White or extremely light-colored paint is the way to go if you want the room to seem larger. For the most feeling of spaciousness, go with white floors, ceiling, and walls. Just because everything is white doesn't mean it has to be boring. You can opt for textures or lightly colored patterns in the wall or floor tiles for a bit more visual interest. When you combine white and light-colored paint with bright overhead lighting, the room will suddenly look and feel larger. Bonus points if there is a window in your bathroom that lets in natural light since this will further add to the feeling of space.

Tip #2: Avoid abrupt transitions

Abrupt transitions most commonly occur with tile in a bathroom. This can cut a space in half vertically, making it seem smaller than it is. Smooth the transitions by avoiding sharp lines. Make the ceiling the same color as the walls, for example, and bring shower tiling all the way up to the ceiling. If possible, consider extending shower tiling outside of the showers, thus making even the bathing space look larger. Avoid common wall tile techniques that cut off at chair rail height. Instead, if you don't want the tile to go to the ceiling, transition to white tiles near the edge of the tiled area and stop it within a foot of the floor.

Tip #3: Streamline the vanity

Oversize vanities also take up space and make a space feel cramped. A pedestal vanity is the best option since this provides maximum floor space both practically and visually. Go with a white vanity to match the rest of the room, so it visually doesn't take up space. A floating sink, attached to the wall, is another space-giving option. As for the mirror, go the other direction and choose the largest mirror possible, so the space seems doubled.

Tip #4: Open up the shower

No need for shower curtains cutting the size of the room in half. Instead, install glass shower doors. Clear glass provides the feeling of more space compared to frosted glass.
