How To Build Your Frameless Glass Shower Enclosure

Britney Simpson

Shower enclosures made of glass are some of the best things introduced to modern bathrooms. As if this couldn't get any better, frameless designs of the same are now available with even better results. Without the frame, the result is a cleaner look that is quite good on its own but also allows the beautiful look of other parts of the bathroom to be seen.

These shower enclosures are available in kits, and for those who are comfortable handling a few tools, assembling your own frameless glass shower enclosures is a great experience.

Put in the Tray

The tray that comes with the shower enclosure is installed on the floor of the shower. In some cases, this tray is bought separately from the actual enclosure. The drain in the floor has to be lower than the tray, so be sure to confirm this during the installation. If the drain is higher than the tray, water will pool in some parts of the shower leading to mold growth. The drain may need to be lowered by a professional. Remember to add some sealant between the drain and the tray.

Put in the Header

The challenge with a frameless enclosure is it still needs something to support it. This is the job of the header which is like an overhead tray. This is what is used as a track that will hold the glass in place after being installed. The header may also have lights. You'll need a drill and some screws to install the header. Work with someone else so they can hold the header while you secure it.

Install the Enclosure

Installation of the enclosure should be a careful process. You'll need to ensure the glass is lined up properly. There are screws and brackets included to help you with this. You'll also have to drill through the wall tiles carefully to avoid damaging them.

Install the Door

The door is the last piece to be installed. The installation method will vary depending on factors such as whether or not the kit comes with double doors. You'll also have to attach parts such as the door knobs.

Apply Sealant

To ensure that moisture stays in the shower, you need to apply a sealant where the glass pieces meet. Caulking should also be done around your trays. At every stage where sealing is done, enough time should be provided for the sealant to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.
